No cars, no noise, just the rustle of a breeze through the pine trees, the song of a chickadee and the occasional call of a loon. You work hard. You deserve a break! This is Jennie Cottage, in Northern Maine, the most forested state in the country. Located about one hour north of Bangor, the cottage is an easy 10 minute drive from I-95. It is close to Baxter State Park, the newly designated Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument (87,500 acres of wilderness) and beautiful Mt. Katahdin (the start or end point of the Appalachian Trail). Canada is about 1 hour away and Acadia National Park is a 2.5 hour trip. With virtually no traffic, on a dirt road, the property is very child friendly (although supervision is a must near the lake, of course). Well-behaved dogs are welcome, too!
Inside, you’ll find a knotty pine interior which features a cozy living room with a large TV and a DVD player (bring your own DVD’s). A new addition to the cottage is satellite TV and high-speed internet service. There is a spacious dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The kitchen has everything you might need, including a refrigerator/freezer, electric range, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, toaster oven and even a bread machine. The water is well water, from an underground spring and we do have hot water! Towels and bed linens are provided but you might want to bring beach towels.
The cottage sleeps six–one bedroom has a full-sized bed with an ultra-comfy memory foam mattress and the other bedroom has two twin beds, both with memory foam mattresses. There are also two twin-sized Aerobeds that you can put on the floor for two more people. The beds are dressed with high-quality sheets and fluffy, goose down comforters are available for each.
In the summer months, the bunkhouse is available and sleeps 2. The bunkhouse has no electricity and no heat and even in the summertime, nights in Maine can be fairly chilly--but it could be the perfect spot for adventurous kids with flashlights!
There is no landline phone and cell service depends on your carrier.
Outside, is the wild beauty of Plunkett Pond, which is a mere 50 feet from the back door. You can practically roll out of bed and into the lake! Two single-seat kayaks with paddles and life jackets are available. You can cruise the 435 acres of sparkling clean water, observing a wide variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, chipmunks, woodpeckers, muskrats, beavers, raccoons, moose, deer, fox, eagles, ospreys, kingfishers, partridge and of course, Maine’s famous loons. If you prefer to relax, you can lounge by the water’s edge, watching the reflection of the clouds in the water until you drift off into a peaceful nap in your lakeside hammock. There is also a small dock and a picnic table. In the evening, you can build a crackling fire in the outdoor firepit while listening to the loons and bull frogs. Roast some weenies or make s’mores! There is also a charcoal grill available, so you can cook your freshly caught fish on the grill! Bring your fishing gear!
(Please be aware that this site, as well as any other site, has scammers. These criminals will pose as the owner of the property and steal your money. If anyone asks you to deposit money directly into a Barclays Bank account, do NOT do it, as that is the preferred bank of these types and usually, all involved are uncooperative about getting your money back, so please be careful and make sure you are dealing with the real owner. Also, please keep in mind that some weeks shown as unavailable on the calendar may still be available, so please ask if you have a specific week or weeks in mind).
We would love for you to be our guests at Jennie Cottage. We like to think that our lakeside retreat captures the essence of the Maine state slogan, “Maine: Life as it should be.” Your memories of your vacation here will last a lifetime.
